If you’d like to confirm insurance coverage before you book an appointment, please ask the following questions:
Questions to ask your insurance provider before you book an appointment:
- Can you explain my benefits for seeing a registered dietitian nutritionist using CPT codes 97802 and 97803?
- Does this benefit only cover specific conditions – such as diabetes, obesity, etc.? If so, what is included?
- Are any diagnoses specifically excluded from my nutrition benefit? Z71.3 is the code most commonly used. Do you cover E66.3 the same as Z71.3. How about coverage for E11.9?
- How many visits am I covered for each year? Do the amount of visits depend on the code or are all covered the same?
- Is telehealth covered?
- Is there a copay to see a registered dietitian nutritionist?
- Given my deductible for the year, including co-pays and co-insurance, what will I need to pay out of pocket to see a registered dietitian nutritionist?
- Is there a separate deductible for nutrition services? After that is met, how is it covered?
- What is the reference number for call – please record this number and keep in case they don’t bill as they told you so that you can reference back to this call.
