4 Ways GLP-1 Drugs Contribute to Weight Loss

June 11, 2024 By Laura Walsh

What is GLP-1? Why Might I Need One?

glp-1 exerciseIt seems like everyone is talking about weight loss drugs right now, especially GLP-1s. With all this chatter about them, it can be difficult to not only know what they are and even what they do.

A GLP-1 is officially called a Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1. This is a hormone that is made in the intensities and is released when the body consumes food.

The primary function of this hormone is to regulate one’s blood sugar and it does this by stimulating insulin. Then glucagon, another hormone is released which helps the body feel fuller longer.

The reason that these drugs are all the rage right now is because of their ability to help individuals lose weight.

4 Ways That GLP-1s Contribute to Weight Loss:

  1. Appetite suppression: A GLP can help reduce one’s appetite. It does this by signaling to the brain that you are full and as a result, an individual might decrease their food intake. Because of a decreased caloric intake, people might lose weight.
  2. Slow down gastric emptying: Since GLPs can help you feel more satisfied for longer, people might eat fewer meals which contributes to weight loss.
  3. Promote insulin sensitivity: A GLP can aid in regulating blood sugar and with this fat storage is reduced.
  4. Occasionally these types of drugs are prescribed to those with diabetes and individuals with obesity.

Effects of GLP-1:

  • Increased hunger levels: Once off a GLP, hunger might return to its previous levels. As a result of this, individuals might experience stronger hunger cues and consume more calories as a result.
  • Metabolism changes: The metabolism is affected by taking a GLP. When off this medication, someone’s metabolism might revert to its previous state. If this occurs, someone might regain the weight that was once lost.
  • Behavioral factors: After stopping treatment it is possible to adopt older, less healthy habits. As a result, individuals might gain weight.
  • Lifestyle changes: Life is unpredictable and factors such as stress, environmental cues, and changes in routine can contribute to weight fluctuations after stopping treatment.

Other GLP-1 Considerations:

  • Social Stigma: When starting a GLP, individuals might feel ashamed or embarrassed that they started a weight loss drug. It is important to note that this is a personal choice. Individuals should not think about the reactions or opinions of those around them
  • Socail Situations: Now that you may have a decreased appetite and are consuming less, do not let comments from others interfere with how you feel and new hunger cues. You have started this treatment for yourself and you should not let outside voices interfere with your journey

The Bottom Line:

GLP-1s can be a helpful tool for individuals who are trying to lose weight or manage medical issues like diabetes. However, if individuals do plan to stop taking them, there are some important things to consider. Before even taking a GLP, think about your current habits. It might be beneficial to instill healthy stress management habits and find a strong support system and even an enjoyable fitness routine before taking a GLP.

If you plan on taking a GLP, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider like a doctor or a registered dietitian nutritionist. A dietitian can help educate individuals on the foods that they should be eating while on these medications. They can also play a role in creating healthy nutrition habits that can carry one throughout life. Remember, you want to make positive lifestyle interventions and establish healthy habits while on the medication so once discontinued, you can continue with a balanced lifestyle. Meal planning and exercise, especially strength training, are key to weight maintenance.
